What is a Rich Project?

 

A Rich Project is a problem that has real life relevance and has to be solved by combining many forms of learning in a complex and “rich” way.

It requires resourceful location, application and presentation of information and learning, with special emphasis on the use of electronic media.

How is a Rich Project constructed?

Step One: Define the Problem to be solved.

Step Two: Create the Executive Summary and Assessment Tasks

Formulate 3 to 6 Core activities that would be needed to solve the problem, the number will depend on the Stage and the nature of the project.

It is essential that teachers ask themselves the following questions when preparing core activities:

What do you want the students to learn about and learn to do?
Learn about: Content matter /  Learn to: processes and skills

 

 Why does that learning matter?
‘So what?’ What relevance does it have for students in the 21st Century?

 

What are you going to get the students to do or produce?
These are your assessment tasks, develop your assessment rubric now.

 

How well do you expect them to do it?
This is the criterion based rubric that must be given out to the students when they receive the assessment tasks.

  • Identify and code outcomes for Core Activities as derived from Every Chance to Learn.
  • Create a bank of differentiated matrix activities to enhance the richness of the assessment task within the Core Activities

 

Step Three: Pedagogical Strategies, Teaching tools and Core Teaching

  • Include suggested Pedagogical Strategies and teaching tools
  • Formulate protocol booklet for the core activities (Stage 2 & 3 students)

How do the Rich Projects work?

Each Problem in a Rich Project MUST:

  • Have a real life basis and be relevant to those solving it.
  • Allow for open ended solutions.
  • Be complex and ill-structured (in short, be a mess!)
  • Rely on technology for a solution.
  • Require collaboration to find a solution
  • Involve reflection and modification.
  • Have a solution that can be represented in a way that assists understanding.
